What is the use of a zero air generator?

Zero air generators are small laboratory equipment designed to purify compressed air used to supply Gas Chromatography with FID detector. The aim is to remove hydrocarbons in the air and avoid disturbances in the detector signal.  The technology employed is a catalytic furnace set at very high temperature. The simplified chemical reaction equation is : O2 + CnHm --> H2O + CO

The operating principle is the following :

• The dry compressed air is injected in the furnace maintained at 350°C by a heating element.

• The hot air is cooled, an output filter removes residual particules.

Two versions are available :

  • C version, equiped with a built-in air compressor,
  • R version, connected to a compressed air network. 


Zero air flow rate :

R version : from 1.5 l/mn to 40 l/mn

C version : from 1.5 l/mn to 10 l/m


Zero air generators are very compact and easy to install.

For TOC applications, CO and CO2 must be removed to zero air. In this case, zero air passes through a molecular sieve in order to reduce residual rate of CO2.
