Industrial laboratory analysis

Amongst the various tools developed in the chemical analysis business, most solutions use one or several gas (helium, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon, zero air). Given its intrinsic qualities and low cost, nitrogen is largely used by the various analyzers brands. Packaging with nitrogen is a major application for nitrogen because it covers a wide range of activities, from food industry to bottling machines used by winemakers. In food application nitrogen is often mixed with CO2 to adapt the conservation action based on the processed products.

Decarbonication consists in reducing the CO2 rate contained in wine before bottling stage. Nitrogen is injected through the wine during transfer, the flow rate of gas in the pipe is around 20 l/mn to 50 l/mn.

A few years ago, winemakers have started using nitrogen-driven pneumatic presses. There are several technologies in this field. You can chose between presses with a loss of nitrogen, or a device with nitrogen recycling that has been developed by one of the leaders in the business. You have to be careful regarding sizing of your generator, as the flow and pressure requirements are high. On some models, nitrogen consumption can be extremely high on a relatively short time, which does not leave much time to store gas.


The flotation is one of the most demanding applications in enology. Indeed, it requires a constant flow delivered at a high pressure of 5 or 6 bar. This process is widely used to clarifie the wine during vintage.

Cross-flow filtering

With flotation cross-flow filtering is also a very demanding application for nitrogen gas. Filters are classified according to their area and the consumption of nitrogen is proportional to it. The second constraint is gas pressure because a cross-flow filter needs 5 or 6 bar to work properly. In this case, nitrogen is used during purge phases and throughout the all working time.

Protection against oxidation

Nitrogen is a neutral (without oxygen) and dry (dew point at -44°C (-47.2°F) at a purity rate of 99.5%) gas. With such characteristics, a multiplicity of applications can be considered where nitrogen is used to protect against the effects of oxidation (e.g. welding, ripple protection in electronic welding…).

Tank blanketing

In a general manner, tank blanketing, consists in making “inert” a storage container, either because products that need to be protected are to be stored, or because a toxic or explosive gas that needs to be removed has been stored in the container. This technique is used in many fields: industry, winemaking, and some laboratory analyzers.

Anoxia treatment

Anoxia treatment is mainly used in museums to protect pictures and works of art against aging. This treatment consists in putting all the objects into a large closed chamber in which nitrogen gas is injected to limit the oxygen rate to  a level less than 0.1% during 21 days. This requires producing nitrogen gas of a very high purity and during a long time.The advantage of the process is that it is not toxic either for the work of art, nor for nature. 



3D additive manufacturing

Medias have talked a lot about the many amazing possibilities provided by 3D additive manufacturing. If we look closer, the manufacturing system with successive layers can be repeated to the infinite by changing the material and support that guide the injection device. Some of these machines manufacture metal elements out of a powder that is made solid with a laser. This transformation is operated in a chamber that is maintained at a very low rate of oxygen by continuously injecting nitrogen of a very high purity.
